Alluvial soil and certain climate conditions combine to provide the ideal growing conditions for banana plants, enabling them to yield fruits with unique qualities. The black clay alluvial saline soil, specific geographical conditions, and the unique method of organic cultivation are also the reasons behind the unique taste and aroma that have given Nanjangud banana a specific geographical identity.
Due to this special combination of factors, the Department for Horticulture under the government of Karnataka proposed the registration of the Nanjangud banana under the Geographical Indications of Goods Act, 1999, to the Office of the Controller-General of Patents, Designs, and Trademarks, Chennai. This gave a bright opportunity to the farmers of Mysore to brand these bananas as ‘Nanjangud banana’.
The exceptional quality and distinctive qualities of Nanjanagud bananas are mostly preserved by the traditional agricultural methods and knowledge of the local farmers, which go beyond the influence of external influences. The success of banana farming in the area is largely due to the agricultural techniques that have been passed down through the generations. Because of their deep understanding of the area, the weather, and farming practices, the farmers of Nanjanagud guarantee that the bananas they grow still match the exacting standards needed for Geographical Indication.
The Nanjanagud banana’s distinct flavor is recognized by its GI designation, which also supports the local economy. It supports sustainable farming methods, cultivates a sense of pride among farmers, and promotes the agricultural legacy of the area. By prohibiting the unauthorized use of the Nanjanagud name for bananas cultivated outside of the approved geographic area, the recognition also protects the rights of the local farmers. Nanjanagud bananas are a prime illustration of how soil, climate, and traditional farming methods can work together to create an extraordinary product.
